From time to time, all of us have our memories challenged.
For some, it can be as simple or difficult as remembering to put the bin out or recalling what we went to the shop for.
For others, it might be something more complicated such as ‘What formula do I need to use to answer this exam question?’
For me, it was ‘Have you written anything for the Thought for the Week column?’
Shopping lists, calendars, revision timetables, gentle prompts from kind-hearted souls all serve their purpose. But if such aids aren’t used or go unnoticed then things might be forgotten and become overlooked when our memories let us down.
However, I take heart in the knowledge that God makes use of reminders too.
Earlier this week, in between the showers and the sunshine there was a rainbow. Then I was reminded of what God said to Noah following the flood that we read about in Genesis: “I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth. Whenever I bring clouds over the earth and the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will remember my covenant between me and you and all living creatures of every kind.”
Now, God isn’t so forgetful that He needs a prompt to help Him remember things; after all, God knows everything. But when God established His unilateral covenant of grace, embracing every living creature, God gave the rainbow as a perpetual sign to us that He hasn’t forgotten His promise.
The reminder is for us.
So when you see a rainbow – and when you don’t! – remember that whatever the weather, God loves you.
