In last week’s letter, Islay councillor Alastair Redman wrote a lot of abuse about other councillors. He seems to think that is the way to conduct council business. I disagree.
Another Islay councillor, Liberal Democrat Robin Currie, is right to work with other parties to get things done for Argyll and Bute.
Robin was voted out of the council leader’s job by an alliance of SNP, Labour and Green councillors, assisted by the king of spades when the vote was tied 18 each.
Robin rightly rejected Alastair Redman’s view that the 18 who were on the losing side should shout abuse at the 18 on the winning side for six months, then try to re-elect Robin as leader on another cut of the cards.
The Liberal Democrat group made the right decision to work with the SNP, Labour and Green councillors for the benefit of all.
Alastair Redman’s view that this somehow damages the UK is nonsense.
Argyll and Bute Council is about providing the best service to Argyll and Bute and has nothing to do with arguments for or against independence for Scotland. That topic is one for debate at UK and Scottish elections, not in the Argyll and Bute Council chamber.

The British Hedgehog Preservation Society (BHPS) is delighted to announce a new animated series, voiced by Chris Packham, is set to launch online during Hedgehog Awareness Week (May 5-11).
The Littlest Hoglet is a stop-motion animated series about British hedgehogs and the dangers they face in our modern, urbanised world.
Inspired by BHPS’s award-winning film Hedgehog Close, each of the five episodes, created by Liquona, features simple actions to help make Britain a more hedgehog-friendly place, where the species can not only survive but thrive.
Each weekday during Hedgehog Awareness Week, a new episode will be aired via the BHPS website and social media platforms so follow the Society on Facebook, X, Instagram and LinkedIn for updates.
We’re really excited to be launching this mini-series during #HedgehogWeek this year – and to have the amazing Chris Packham on board too.
Hedgehog populations are in serious decline, and we need to act now to reverse this – so we hope the story of The Littlest Hoglet will inspire people to create hedgehog highways and establish havens for our prickly friends.
This Hedgehog Awareness Weekm we’ll also be sharing tips on how to ‘welcome wildlife’ – by creating space for nature in your own gardens or green spaces and encouraging landowners such as schools and councils to do the same.
As well as the series launch, Hedgehog Awareness Week will feature interactive daily competitions, celebrity videos, and new infographics kindly donated by The Future is Unmown.
