Preparations and weeks of practice by Oban’s young karate athletes almost came to nothing as a result of a traffic incident on Friday June 24 causing long delays at Connel.

The hold-up resulted in the Oban Shotokan Junior Karate Club Championships being cancelled.

However, Oban Scout Hall – where the club normally train every Friday – kindly allowed them entry into their hall on the Sunday and disappointment turned to excitement as participants arrived for their first club competition.

The day started with a group warm up directed by Oban Shotokan club coach Rab Neil, then the games began.

First event was the Open Kata category where all the participants had to perform a sequence of pre-arranged movements with focus and precision. Next were the Kumite individual events for novice, intermediate and advanced level (sparring) ending with the team Kumite section.

All athletes performed to the best of their ability showing a high standard of technique, speed and agility.

Finally, after the much sought after club championship titles were decided, the medal winners headed to the winners’ podium.
