Lochaber Yacht Club (LYC) Regatta was planned as a two-day event this year with dinghies sailing on Saturday June 18 and keelboats on Sunday June 19.
After a briefing on arrival, the dinghy crews waited patiently for the weather to clear and the wind to ease. Sadly it wasn’t to be and mid-afternoon race officers decided to cancel the day.
This was the first time a whole day had been lost to windy Lochaber weather in the history of the club. After the disappointment of the day, members gathered for a barbecue and entertainment from the Ragtags in the evening.
Sunday saw much better sailing weather with keelboats gathering at the start line for the first of five races.
With a fickle wind it was a struggle to get across the line but after a few gusts and some tweaking of the sails everyone got going. Competition was tight but Maverix was triumphant in the end for the solings with Misty taking the win for the keelboats.
A prizegiving followed, along with an impromptu barbecue and chat about the day on the water.
Successful events like this couldn’t happen without the help of volunteers on the shore, in the galley, manning safety boats and in the race office. Members are generous with their time and it is appreciated by the participating sailors. A huge thank you to everyone involved with the organisation of the weekend.
