Do you remember when the Proclaimers played in the Corran Halls in Oban in 2018?

Nichola Maclean, 45, a lifelong fan of the superstar twins, certainly does.

While it will have been a fantastic event for everyone who attended, it was eye-opening for Nichola in an extraordinary way as it helped inspire her to embark on a new fitness campaign.

It took four years in the planning but on Saturday June 11 Nichola, who was born and bred in Oban, achieved her goal of walking 500 miles in 25 days, raising thousands of pounds for four charities.

Her route took her from her current home in Tyndrum, where she works at the Green Welly Stop, to John O’ Groats and back, staying with friends and family along the way.

The longest distance covered in a day was 27 miles and despite two unplanned breaks when she caught Covid and suffered a stress fracture in her foot at midpoints in her endeavour, she proudly crossed the finish line with her Uncle George who joined her on her last day’s trek.

According to Nichola, when asked about various parts of her trip, the most picturesque place she passed by was a waterfall in a gorge near Golspie, Sutherland, and the most boring had to be Rannoch Moor.

When asked if she had any plans for holding more charity events in the future, Nichola said: ‘Well, I wouldn’t be a true fan if I didn’t walk 500 more!’

Nichola set a fundraising goal of £20,000 via the JustGiving website, which which will be split between Argyll Beats Cardiovascular Disease; Scotland’s Charity Air Ambulance; Cancer Research and 500 Miles. https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/nichola-maclean-1
