Cò air nach biodh iongnadh, sgreamh, ach cuideachd bròn agus tomhas de thruas, a’ coimhead duine òg, bliadhna air fhichead, ag aideachadh gun do mhurt e sìobhaltach nach robh ga bhagairt ann an dòigh sam bith, anns an Ucràin. Iongnadh gum biodh fear a bha cho òg na chomanndair air tanca Ruiseanach, agus ceist an e comasan àraid neo gainnead shaighdearan iomchaidh, a dh’fhàg an dreuchd sin aige?

Sgreamh, ri linn ’s mar a bha na saighdearan Ruiseanach seo air spridhe gun rian, air carbad a ghoid, agus mar a loisg am fear seo air duine neoichiontach air an t-sràid. Bròn, ag amharc na banntraich aonranaich thùrsaich na suidhe dìreach beagan throighean bhon mhurtair san t-seòmar-cùrtach, agus truas ’s dòcha a bhith a’ faicinn cuideigin cho òg ag aideachadh eucoir cogaidh. B’ e tachartas annasach a bha seo ann an caochladh dhòighean, agus gu sònraichte leis gun do thachair e cho sgiobalta, is an cogadh fhathast a’ dol. A rèir aithris tha mìltean de chùisean eucoir cogaidh air tachairt san Ucràin agus bha a’ chùis-lagha seo ga stiùireadh gu mionaideach a thaobh lagh eadar-nàiseanta gus nach gabh a modh-giùlain neo a co-dhùnadh àicheadh, ach leis mar a tha An Ruis air a bhith a’ cleith fìrinn mun chogadh ’s neònach mura dèan Putin breug den tachartas seo cuideachd. Ach ’s coma sin dhan duine òg seo a th’ air e fhèin a dhìteadh gu ’s dòcha binn-beatha prìosain, agus a shaoghal an ìre mhath a’ crìochnachadh mus do thòisich e ceart!

Bidh mi tric a’ smaoineachadh gum bheil siostam lagha na dùthcha seo fhèin uireasbhach a thaobh na h-ùine mhòir a tha e tric a’ toirt a’ cur cuid de chùisean-lagha agus rannsachaidhean poblach air adhart, gun iomradh air na caran a thèid a shnìomh air ciall fhaclan nuair a thig an fhianais.

Mar eisimpleir cho-dhùin breithneachadh air mar a chaidh seann daoine a ghluasad à ospadail gu ruige dachannan-cùraim Shasainn aig toiseach glasaidh-sluaigh Covid 19, nach robh sin idir a’ briseadh an lagha (illegal) ged a bha e an aghaidh an lagha (unlawful)! Mar sin cha robh am Ministear Matt Hancock ciontach à gnìomh mì-laghail, agus cha tug Slàinte Poblach Shasainn rabhadh ceart dha ro-làimh a thaobh cunnart dha na seann daoine! Tha mise air feuchainn ri eadar-theangachadh eadar-dhealaichte a dhèanamh air a’ Bheurla, ach saoilidh mi gum bheil am faclair Gàidhlig ceart le “mì-laghail” airson gach facal! Ged a thuigear argamaidean airson cùisean-lagha a ghluasad nas luaithe tha e cudromach gun tèid ùine reusanta a cheadachadh gus fiosrachadh mionaideach dha gach taobh a tharraing ri chèile, agus tha gun teagamh beagan dàlach a’ leigeil le teas feirge agus bròin sìoladh. Fàgaidh cus dàlach cunnart gun tèid fiosrachadh deatamach air chall, agus nas miosa buileach gum bàsaich cuid mun tèid ceartas a dhearbhadh dhaibh tro ghliocas cùirte!

Canaidh mòran dhaoine gur suarach ùghdarras dhùthchannan a thug fichead bliadhna dhìomhain a’ feuchainn ri sìth a thoirt gu Afghanistan, comhairle a-nise a thabhann san Ucràin!

People watching the 21-year-old Russian army sergeant and tank commander confessing to the war-crime of murdering an unarmed Ukrainian civilian must have felt a variety of emotions.

Disgust and fury at the evidence of four invading force soldiers stealing a car while on a drunken spree, when one of them shot the civilian for no reason. Surprise at the youth of this promoted soldier and wonder as to whether he was particularly able, or whether his role is an indication of lack of choice by his superiors.

Finally, there will have been sorrow for the lonely widow sitting a few feet from her husband’s murderer, and perhaps some slight sympathy for the young man whose normal life is virtually ending as he faces severe penalty for the war crime to which he has confessed.

This trial for a war-crime was unusual in that it was taking place while the conflict is still happening, but the confession by the accused makes the outcome predictable and also quite possibly sets a precedent for more Russian combatants to escape involvement in a conflict which they do not support.

I sometimes feel that justice is ill served by our own system when public enquiries take many years to be convened and sadly, but frequently, some of those seeking justice do not survive to hear it. It is important that adequate time is available for both sides of any case to assemble their evidence, and it is also true that such time allows the heat of outrage and pain to ease.  Too long a delay, however, surely prevents closure and any possible healing process, while it also risks the erosion of important witness memory.

Time may be a great healer, but like all medicines it should be applied judiciously.
