Co-dhiù neo-eisimeileach, neo fo bhratach phoilitigeach, feumaidh comhairlichean a thèid a thaghadh an-diugh beachdan agus rùintean an luchd-bhòtaidh a chur air adhart gu dùrachdach modhail fhad ’s a tha iad gan riochdachadh. Tha mi ag ràdh “gu modhail” air sgàth ’s gum bheil “riochdaire”  na sgàthan air a’ choimhearsnachd a tha e / ì a’ riochdachadh, agus mur eil iadsan gan giùlan fhèin gu ceart cothromach tha cunnart ann gun toir iad droch-ainm dhan fheadhainn a chur dhan dreuchd iad! Saoilidh mi gum bheil ceistean mhì-ghiùlain ann an saoghal riaghlaidh na dùthcha air a bhith aig bàrr nan naidheachdan fad ùine mhòr a-nise, agus theagamh gur e rud math a th’ ann gum bheil ana-caitheamh air cumhachd agus ughdarras riaghlaidh ga chronachadh agus ga dhìteadh, ach aig an aon àm tha e leamh a bhith a’ faicinn mòran ag amas air peanas a sheachnadh.  Aig àm sgrìobhaidh seo tha aire nam meadhanan-naidheachd a’ cuimseachadh air mar a tha cuid de na boireannaich ann an saoghal phoilitigs air a bhith a’ fulang aire de sheòrsa mhì-iomchaidh bho fhìreanaich, agus tha casaid “mysogyny” ga chleachdadh bitheanta.

Mar a dh’èirich dhomh fhìn, ’s dòcha gun do sheall sibhse cuideachd air faclair gus ciall an fhacail seo a dhearbhadh, agus gun gabh sibh an aon ìre de dh’ annas mur eil e idir san fhaclair agaibh!   Tha iomadach faclair san taigh againne, ach fiù ’s san fhear is ùire dhiubh, “Chambers 2-in-1 Dictionary & Thesaurus”, chan eil iomradh air an fhacal “mysogyny”!  Am feumar mar sin tuigsinn gur e facal ùr a th’ ann am “mysogyny – dislike of, contempt for, or ingrained prejudice against women”?

Gu cinnteach, agus gu muladach, chan-e gnìomh ùr a th’ ann oir tha boireannaich air a bhith a’ fulang droch dhìol agus dochann fad linntean an t-saoghail agus ’s e masladh do-labhairt a th’ ann gum bheil leithid seo fhathast bitheanta ann an dùthchannan a tha gam meas fhèin sìobhalta! ’S fheudar a’ ràdh, mar eisimpleir,  gum bheil e annasach gum bithte a’ gabhail ri beachdan shuarach Dhòmhnaill Trump mu bhoireannaich agus tha ceist mu bhreithneachadh nam milleanan ann an Ameireagaidh a tha a’ toirt taic dhà a dh’aindeoin na tha e air a ràdh.  Ach cha leig sinne a leas  sealltainn a-null thairis airson eisimpleirean de mhì-ghiùlan, tha iad a’ tachairt an seo gach latha cuideachd, ach theagamh aig amannan gum bheil an cron car doirbh aithneachadh nuair a thachras e. Bha e riamh fìor gum bheil glè thric cleachdadh neo abairt a bha èibhinn uaireigin a’ lìonnrachadh ann am beachd an t-sluaigh chun na h-ìre ’s nach gabhte ris tuilleadh, agus fhad ’s a tha an gluasad bheachd sin a’ gabhail àite tha cunnart ann gun tèid daoine a tha gu ìre neo-chiontach a’ dhìteadh.

Tha beagan den sin an luib mhì-ghiùlan fhear ri boireannaich an-dràsta, ach chan fhaod e bhith na leisgeul ma tha sinn dol a’ dhèanamh cinnteach nach bidh feum air eadar-theangachadh Gàidhlig, neo eile, air “misogyny”!

With accusations of misogyny leading so many media headlines, I was astonished that the word didn’t appear in any of our home dictionaries, even those published within the past 20 years. Sadly, the abuse of women has existed for centuries so why should the absence of this word in dictionaries imply it is a new phenomenon?

It is a profound embarrassment to a self-styled civilised world that such abuse still exists and, for example, one must question the judgement of the millions who support the likes of Donald Trump as a national leader following his disgusting disclosure on his attitude to women.

Whilst right and proper that such attitudes be exposed and challenged, it is disappointing that the charges frequently fail to be suitably punished. One difficulty is that as public opinion and attitudes evolve, and what was once a source of humour becomes unacceptable, relatively innocent people can be caught in the middle.

But this cannot be accepted as an excuse if the world is to conquer this continuing societal disgrace!
