St Columba’s RC Primary School pupils and staff have been busy promoting Fairtrade Fortnight.
Among events organised by the Caol school’s Fairtrade committee were an assembly on Wednesday February 6 explaining the work farmers in poorer countries do to produce the ingredients which go into treats like baked gingerbread men and a ‘Random Act of Kindness’ walk.
The Fairtrade committee also went on a walk around Caol.
A school spokesperson said: ‘The whole school took advantage of the good weather on Friday February 25 and shared a smile with members of the public and handed them a Fairtrade chocolate bar.
‘Each chocolate bar was labelled with the wording ‘Improve the lives of Fairtrade Farmers’. Some lucky Caol residents were delighted to find chocolate bars had been posted through their letter boxes.’
Unfortunately, due to current Covid guidelines, the school was unable to hold its annual Fairtrade coffee morning so the committee decided to organise a ‘Fairtrade Big Break’ on Thursday March 3.
This involved pupils and staff enjoying a taster session of Fairtrade snacks and treats prepared by committee members.
During the two weeks of Fairtrade Fortnight, individuals, groups and companies come together to celebrate the people in developing countries who grow food but who are often underpaid and exploited.
