Motorists using the A86 near Loch Laggan are set to benefit from an improved road surface, with works due to get underway on Monday 14 March.

The programme of improvements will see over 2km of the A86 resurfaced.

The project is scheduled to start on Monday, March 14 and is expected to take place on two sites over three weeks, with all works anticipated to be completed by 6am on Friday, April 1 subject to weather conditions.

The programme of works is as follows:

•A86 Tullochroam – Monday, March 14 to Monday, March 28 (11 nights, excluding Friday and Saturday nights), 8pm – 6am

Due to the narrow carriageway width at this location of the A86, a full road closure will be implemented between 8pm and 6am to allow the works to be undertaken safely. As there is no suitable diversion route available amnesties will be provided at 9pm, 10pm, 11pm, 12am, 2am, and 4am each night. During these times vehicles will be safely escorted through the site under a 10mph convoy traffic management system. Road users are encouraged to arrive in good time to ensure they are accommodated within the amnesty period.

•A86 west of Lochaber boundary (day-time) – Tuesday, March 15 to Wednesday, March 16 (two days), 7am – 7pm

A 10mph convoy system will be in place on the A86 between 7am and 7pm each day.

•A86 west of Lochaber boundary (night-time) – Tuesday, March 29 to Thursday, March 31 (three nights)

Due to the narrow carriageway width at this location of the A86, a full road closure will be implemented between 8pm and 6am to allow the works to be undertaken safely.  As there is no suitable diversion route available, amnesties will be provided at 9pm, 10pm, 11pm, 12am, 2am, and 4am each night. During these times vehicles will be safely escorted through the site under a 10mph convoy traffic management system. Road users are encouraged to arrive in good time to ensure they are accommodated within the amnesty period.

Outwith working hours, and to keep disruption to a minimum, a speed restriction of 30mph will remain in place on the A86 as traffic will be running over a temporary surface.

Access through the works site for emergency services will be maintained at all times.

Eddie Ross, BEAR Scotland’s North West Representative said: ‘This surfacing project encompassing two locations on the A86 near Loch Laggan will help to address defects and greatly improve the route for road users.

‘The planned overnight closures are essential to completing the works safely given to the narrow widths of the road at these locations. We’ve taken steps to limit the overall impact of the project as best we can, avoiding Friday and Saturday nights and by undertaking works overnight or by maintaining through traffic using convoy operation when conducting daytime works.

‘Our teams will do all they can to complete the works as quickly and safely as they can, and we thank the local community and road users for their patience in advance.  We encourage road users to plan ahead before setting out by checking the Traffic Scotland website for up to date travel information.’
