Many local people were a bit surprised when the new telephone directory popped through the letterbox.

Not because it is only a shadow of its former self, being thin, light and not very big. Nor because a strong set of glasses may be needed for any search of person or number. No, what caused more than a few raised eyebrows was the front cover, which has a photograph of a happy gentleman with a spanner saying ‘Fit like? It’s your local Phone Book’.

Adding to the confusion, it goes on to say that it is The Highlands and Islands Edition, which many have observed as a slight anomaly, given that the expression of enquiry into one’s well-being is generally confined to the Aberdeen area.

However, Corpach resident and former Lochaber Mountain Rescue Team member, George Bruce, who moved to Lochaber from Aberdeen more than 50 years ago was delighted at the greeting, which he still uses daily when meeting friends in the street.

He told us: ‘I didn’t notice it at first, but when it was pointed out to me I thought it was quite funny. At last people will realise that I am indeed a true Highlander!’
