Ged a tha sinn air starsaich na Nollaige tha mi ga fhaotainn doirbh cuspair a lorg anns na naidheachdan air am bheil sunnd agus spiorad na ràithe. Cha chuimhnich mi air àm, seach àm chogaidhean san robh Breatann, san robh na meadhanan cho gruamach is iad a’ riaghan eadar buamastaireachd agus casaidean slaightearachd aig àrd-ìre ann an riaghaltas Bhreatainn agus air bhoil le aithrisean mun t-strèan Omicron de Chovid 19 a’ sgaoileadh cho bras feadh na dùthcha.

Ann an dòigh tha an t-strì an aghaidh Covid mar chogadh feadh an t-saoghail, agus tha gabhaltachd an Omicron a’ cur uimhir de dh’eagal air luchd-stiùiridh slàinte is gum bheil cunnart gun caill an sluagh misneachd agus earbsa annta. ’S e fìrinn na cùise gum bheil eòlaichean gann de dh’fhiosrachadh mun tionndadh as ùire den bhìoras agus fhad ’s a tha iad a’ feuchainn ri làn-aithne fhaotainn oirre tha ise a’ siabadh tron t-sluagh mar fhalaisg tron ghaoith. Nuair a chaillear smachd air falaisg mar is minig a thachair air Ghàidhealtachd, bhiodh na bha air chomas de mhuinntir nam bailtean mun cuairt a’ tighinn cuideachd gus feuchainn ri smachd fhaotainn air an teine, agus a chur às. Bha tuigse aca gur e uallach agus dleastanas coimhearsnachd a bh’ ann sin a dhèanamh, gus an cuid fearainn is eile a dhìon.

Mar a tha mi air a ràdh an seo iomadh uair roimhe tha mise den bheachd gum bheil an aon seòrsa uallaich agus dleastanas oirnn a thaobh dìon a dhèanamh an aghaidh Covid, agus ged nach tuig mi carson a bhiodh neach sam bith a’ diùltadh banachdach tha mi ag aithneachadh gum bheil còir phearsanta aca air an taghadh sin. Ach chan eil mi a’ creidsinn gum bheil còir aig duine galair sam bith a sgaoileadh feadh dhaoine eile! Sin an dùbhlan as motha a th’ aig riaghaltasan an t-saoghail is iad air an aon làimh a’ cur bhanachdachaidhean air milleanan den t-sluagh, fhad ’s a tha mìltean eile a’ leantainn air adhart a’ gànrachadh an co-chreutairean!

Ged a tha riaghaltasan agus ùghdarrasan de gach seòrsa a’ dèanamh an dìcheall gus sgapadh a’ ghalair a cheannsachadh agus an sluagh a dhìon chan eil na nì iad gun chronachadh, mar a tha fìor mu na riaghailtean a tha gan toirt a-staigh às ùr ann an dachaighean cùraim. Tha e doirbh da-rìribh smaoineachadh ciamar a thèid aig na h-ionadan sin air, an dà chuid, na seann daoine a tha fon cùram a dhìon bho ghalair agus aig an aon àm leigeil le càirdean tadhal orra. ’S e dùbhlan dòrainneach a tha sin gun teagamh, agus am feum gliocas Sholaimh!

Chan eil dad a tha nas tlachdmhoire na tadhal air càirdean agus eòlaich agus b ’e sin pàirt de spiorad na Nollaige a bha gu ìre air àicheadh dhuinn mun àm seo an-uiridh. Ach aig àm sgrìobhaidh seo tha a’ chead sin againn am-bliadhna agus tha mi ’n dòchas gum faigh sibh cothrom air! Nollaig chridheil dhuibh!

Just a few days short of Christmas and it is difficult to identify a news topic which reflects the joy and spirit of the season. Only when Britain has been involved in conflict can I recall such gloomy news.

Highland communities always rallied to fight heather fires which had gone out of control, people recognised this as a responsibility and as I have said here before I believe the fight against Covid is a similar community responsibility. While I cannot understand why people refuse vaccination, I fully accept their personal right to so choose, but I do not accept that anyone has a right to carry a virus which infects others.

Whatever steps are taken to arrest the spread of Covid are likely to be challenged, as is the case with the plans to reintroduce restrictions in our care homes. It is extraordinarily difficult to determine how these homes can best protect their clients while allowing family access to them.

Nothing can surpass the pleasure of visiting friends and relatives and spending time with them, a privilege largely denied to us at this time last year. However, at the time of writing this we are permitted such visits and I hope you will take full advantage of that! Merry Christmas!
