A trio of Lochaber boxers and their coaches braved the weather last weekend to compete in the Northern District finals in Inverurie.

And all three were well rewarded for their efforts.

Fresh from Lochaber Phoenix Boxing Club’s own Home Show in Caol Community
Centre at the beginning of November, Lee Bruce, Kevin Aitchison and Farquhar
MacRae once again climbed into the ring, this time up against the top boxers from across the North of Scotland.

Lee Bruce weighed in at 81kg in an elite final against a much more experienced
opponent from Highland Boxing Academy, Inverness. Boxing in three, three
minute rounds for the first time, he gave what coaches described as an
‘outstanding’ performance in a really close contest to be beaten on points and
collect a silver medal.

Kevin Aitchison boxed at 75kg in another elite final against an adversary with many
more bouts than himself. Also boxing three, three minute rounds for the first time,
Kevin settled into the bout but his opponent’s experience showed in the last round. However, the Lochaber man came away with silver medal after putting in a great effort and his coaches were happy with his determination and ability.

Farquhar MacRae took the ring at 92kg in a novice final, giving away close to 10kg
to his opponent from Sheddocksley Club in Aberdeen. He started slowly but
gradually started to take the upper hand, going from strength to strength in each round
to win gold on a well-deserved unanimous decision. Coaches described his
performance as his best yet representing the club.

Farquhar and Lee will be in action again on December 11 at a show in Inverness when they will be joined by junior boxer Jamie Douglas.
