Following the resignation of former councillor Ben Thompson, ward 11, Caol and Mallaig, earlier this month, The Highland Council has confirmed no by-election to fill the vacancy will take place.

As the vacancy for this ward has occurred within six months of the local government election on May 5 next year, an election shall not be held, in line with the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1973.

The process to elect a councillor for Ward 21, Fort William and Ardnamurchan, is currently under way as this vacancy falls outwith the six-month legislative time.

Polling for that by-election will take place on December 2 with the votes to be counted within the ward on December 3.
