Local MSP Kate Forbes has been attending the COP26 climate conference in Glasgow.

The SNP MSP for Skye, Lochaber and Badenoch said it was a great privilege for Scotland to be hosting such a critically important event, which has drawn leaders and negotiators from around the world.

‘There are great economic opportunities for Scotland as part of the just transition to net zero carbon emissions,’ Ms Forbes told the Lochaber Times on Tuesday – day two of the two-week conference.

‘The Highlands and Islands have played such an integral role in the nation’s energy generation – both in oil and gas, as well as renewable sources. We have an opportunity again to reap the economic benefits of this industrial shift.’

Among those attending that Ms Forbes has met on day one was Bertrand Piccard – the Swiss explorer, environmentalist and chairman of Solar Impulse.

Ms Forbes said: ‘He handed me his Environmental Solutions Guide for Scotland, which is full of great ideas to invest in the economy and reduce carbon.’
