The Highland Council has paid tribute to Councillor Ian Ramon who died last Thursday.
Councillor Ramon was elected in the 2017 local government election for Ward 21 – Fort William and Ardnamurchan – and served on the Lochaber Committee and Communities and Place Committee.
Council convenor Councillor Bill Lobban paid tribute to Councillor Ramon, calling him a well-respected member of the council who would be sorely missed by fellow members.
‘His keen input into our debates was much appreciated. Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, I had not seen him personally for quite some time but in better times our joint interest in lighthouses was always extremely interesting. Our thoughts are with his family and close friends at this sad time,’ added Councillor Lobban.
Councillor Andrew Jarvie, Leader of the Scottish Conservative and Unionist Group on the council, commented: ‘This news comes as such a shock to all of us. He was an incredible man who always seemed to bounce back and was eager to get back to council meetings.
‘As an immensely popular local man, Ian will be missed not just by all of us in the Scottish Conservative Group, but a great many on the peninsula and across the Highlands.
‘I can only express my deepest sorrow with his family at this sudden and difficult news.’
Councillor Ramon’s fellow Ward 21 member, Councillor Andrew Baxter, who chairs the Lochaber Committee, also paid tribute: ‘Although Ian was a quiet individual, he always represented his home area of Ardnamurchan and the peninsula with great dedication and tenacity.
‘His contribution on their behalf was always insightful and made his fellow councillors pause and think.
‘We’ve lost a great community champion for some of the most remote and rural areas of Lochaber.’
