After many years of committing to training without the prospect of competitive rugby fixtures a Lochaber U18 travelled to Ardrossan at the weekend for their first game in a Western conference.
The Lochaber team was bolstered by players from the surrounding areas such as Oban and also included players who had never played in a competitive match before.
Ardrossan Academicals had already played their first league game and this showed in the initial stages of the first half when they started off the match stronger and scored the opening points.
Lochaber soon gained their rhythm and confidence and responded by putting points on the board themselves.
The remainder of the match saw further well-executed tries from both teams in what ended up being a well-contested match.
In the last 10 min of the match Lochaber were unable to maximise a couple of opportunities that would have seen them equalise. The game ended 31-24.
Based on their first match performance and a great displayed of passion and resilience it looks to be a promising return to competitive rugby for the U18 team.
The next game is at home this Sunday, September 19, against Strathaven and the team will be hoping for good local support and a strong performance.
