Fly-tipping and litter seem once again to be dominating our news pages as the world opens up – pages 4 and 9.

While we can all be quick to blame the huge influx of tourists that are currently gracing our shores, locals can also be at fault while ‘cash strapped’ Argyll and Bute Council also has a role to play in helping to alleviate the problem.

A collective solution needs to be found – and quickly.

We have a fantastic community in Oban, Lorn and the Islands but no sooner have individuals and groups cleaned up the mess that others leave behind, more appears.

More bins and signs would definitely help and the council is actively encouraging members of the public to report it on its website when they come across any fly-tipping or littering.

Keep Oban Beautiful’s Doorstep Challenge is another exciting and innovative idea. Perhaps this could be taken out to the wider community and developed by other groups?

By working together, we can all help and maybe even say good riddance to bad rubbish once and for all.
