Plans for a two-and-a-half-mile cycle and pedestrian path linking Dunbeg and Connel have been submitted to Argyll and Bute Council.

The proposed shared-use facility would follow the route of the existing A85 road and is aimed to deliver a new sustainable link between the two communities.

Council planning chiefs are expected to deliver their verdict by the middle of September, with the public now able to view the plans and submit comments.

The planned route will also join existing footpaths at Dunbeg and North Connel in order to serve recreational and long-distance users.

A supporting statement by planning consultants Ironside Farrar, representing the applicants, the Scottish Association for Marine Science, gave more detail on the proposal.

A spokesperson said: ‘Delivery of the dual-use pathway will, in places, involve technical works to highway infrastructure, including the widening of existing footpaths and the creation of a signalised crossing in Connel, and associated road-markings.

‘Existing culverts will be crossed and extended in some locations. In other sections, the pathway would be supported by retaining wall structures within the verge/embankment to provide a level route.

‘Sections of the proposed route which crosses existing wetlands will require appropriate drainage infrastructure in the form of swales. Isolated tree removals are required to clear the pathway route.’

The statement added that the aim of the proposed pathway is to deliver a new sustainable link between the communities, providing additional access options to primary education establishments, places of employment, transport interchanges nodes, and the amenities in the respective towns.

The proposed development has been reviewed against policies contained in the adopted Argyll and Bute Local Development Plan.

The adopted supplementary guidance and proposed Local Development Plan 2 have also been considered.
