Tobermory lifeboat’s new husband and wife volunteers have had their first call out.

Edd and Charly Hewett, who live on a yacht, were involved when the Mull crew was tasked with helping an 8m motorboat with mechanical failure near Calgary Bay off the northwest of Mull. There were two people onboard when the call came from the UK Coastguard just after 11am on Friday July 30.

Edd is a crew member and Charly is a Deputy Launching Authority.

The motorboat was taken under tow temporarily by a rigid inflatable boat before the all-weather lifeboat took over and got the stricken vessel back to Tobermory alongside the pontoons.

Charly said: ‘I got my first call only two-and-a-half hours into my first duty. I was worried I’d freeze when answering the phone but I had everything prepared to take and pass on the brief and the lifeboat was away in a few minutes. A sigh of relief, kettle on and a high five when Edd got back a few hours later.’

Edd added: ‘It was exciting to cast off and have the vessel immediately at full throttle but I soon relaxed seeing how calm the rest of the crew were. It was an ideal first shout, nice and calm and not too much time pressure, a perfect opportunity to put the training into practice. I really feel like a member of the team now.’

Deputy Second Coxswain Iain Malcolm thanked the crew of the RIB for their help.
