Drimnin Timber Transport (DTT) has confirmed its new pier at Auliston Point on Morvern has been used for the first time to bring heavy equipment in to service the three forests in the north-west of the peninsula.
This realises a long-held ambition to avoid transporting such equipment along the single-track section of the A884 and the single-track B849 roads.
Since October last year, DTT has been building 12kms of timber road and a floating pier at Auliston Point, which lies at the entrance to the Sound of Mull opposite Tobermory.
The road has been constructed by DTT on behalf of its members, Mungosdail, Carnacailliche and Auchnasaul Forests, with support from the Scottish Government’s Strategic Timber Transport Scheme.
It will enable 200,000 cubic metres of timber – equivalent to 20,000 trips by truck – to be shipped out over the next 15 years without using the narrow and unsuitable public roads. Timber shipments will begin shortly.

This is the first time it has been possible to bring such equipment into the area other than by using the B849 road. It will enable most heavy equipment such as timber harvesting and forwarding machines to be brought in by sea.
Derek Lewis, a director of DTT, told the Lochaber Times: ‘This represents a major milestone in our efforts to remove the need for heavy forestry and timber traffic to use the B849 and to adopt more environmentally-friendly sea transport.
