Management of a popular Skye eatery has blamed Brexit for its temporary closure saying that they ‘cannot continue to do our home cooking in such a situation’.
New Creelers Restaurant in Broadford was named as one of the six best seafood restaurants in Scotland by the Herald newspaper earlier this year but after experiencing difficulties in sourcing staff, food, wine and custom from Europe the management team sent the Lochaber Times the following email this week.
‘We would like to inform you that we are closed, probably until next year.
‘The three main reasons are:
• It is impossible to find staff, especially a chef. With Brexit we can no longer get work permits for seasonal workers and most British people do not want to work so far from a city.
• It’s impossible to get vegetables from the UK or Europe. We get onions from Mexico, garlic from China of poor quality, we have to dump more than 50 per cent. European wines take more than a month to be delivered, the customs declarations are too high. In addition, there is currently a bacterium that makes the shellfish unfit for consumption. Even in a shop like the Co-op (Portree, Broadford or Kyle) there are days without vegetables.
• The significant drop in tourists, especially those from Europe and Asia.
‘We apologise for this situation, but we cannot do our home cooking in such a situation.’
We managed to catch up with manager Eric Davet earlier this week who told us that he was in the process of making his way back to his native France and that his business at the New Creelers had been put on hold.
‘If they (tourists, activities) don’t come back it will be too late. I will focus on other restaurants abroad,’ he added.
