Oban Saints’ Central Scottish league team got word last week that the date for the play-off game between the winners of Division 1A and 1B to see who will be crowned overall winners of Division One will take place at Dalziel Park, Motherwell on Saturday 10 July.
Their opponents will be Castlemilk Dynamo who pipped Gartcosh United by two points to win Division 1A while Saints had won Division 1B a long time ago with Lesmahagow finishing runners-up eight points behind.
Castlemilk, who used to be a Sunday league team, won five trophies in the 18/19 season, including the SAFA Sunday Trophy, the equivalent of the Scottish Amateur Cup and have gathered together a strong squad full of experience and promising young players, so Saints know that they will be facing very difficult opponents and will have to be at their best to see the Division One trophy head back up the road to Oban.
With the Central Scottish AFL restructuring their league set-up to two divisions of 14 teams next season, the league had to play on under Scottish Government restrictions and Scottish FA protocols to finish season 19/20 to see who won the Premier Division and who gained promotion to the top league, as well as determining who got relegated.
Congratulations go to St Patrick’s FP from Dumbarton who won the Premier Division, with Eastfield in second place. Unfortunately for Campsie Minerva they were relegated. Oban Saints, Lesmahagow, Castlemilk Dynamo and Gartcosh United were all promoted to the Premier Division for next season.
The Saints squad returned to training this week and club Secretary David Buchanan has organised some attractive pre-season friendlies starting with Lochgilphead Red Star in Oban on Saturday July 3. Thanks to Colin Weir and the Lochgilphead side for stepping in after original opponents Callander Thistle had to call off; Saturday July 10 – Division One play-off game against Castlemilk in Motherwell; Saturday July 17 – Vale of Leven in Oban; Saturday July 24 – Thorn Athletic in Oban; Saturday July 31 – Stenhousemuir in Oban.
