It is not often this column ventures into the subject of current affairs – at least not current affairs beyond the west coast of Scotland.
But this cracker had to be included.
I am led to believe the GG choir recently had a virtual rehearsal. As readers will know, I have sources planted throughout the upper echelons of Gaelic society here in Glasgow to get the best scoops for my column.
My source within the GG tells me the meeting started with general chit-chat about a power cut that had affected homes in Bearsden and Byers Road.
When someone suggested, tongue in cheek, that it was perhaps to do with the plane that had been forced to land in Bellahouston, everyone was confused. No-one had heard of such an incident.
Asked for more details, the chap explained it was to do with the arrest of a young opposition journalist. At this point, of course, it became clear the story related not to a Bellahouston plane, but to a Belarusian plane!
And that concludes my rare foray into the world of international relations.
Other than that, it has been quite a week in Glasgow. The weather has been kind to us for the first time in ages and this is my first opportunity this year to describe it as ‘taps aff’ weather!
The sun has been keeping everyone in good form despite this frustrating period in a higher tier than the rest of the country.
Even within tier 3, I managed quite a sociable weekend. I joined a couple of pals at the Cranside Kitchen on Saturday afternoon. This is a really impressive pop-up outdoor beer-garden and restaurant by the Rotunda in Finnieston.
The Rotunda has been a restaurant for as long as I have been in Glasgow but it was built in the late 1800s as part of the Glasgow Harbour Tunnel – linking with a similar building on the south of the river.
Today, in the shadow of the Hydro and the Finnieston Crane, it is an excellent place to sit and have some food – with various restaurants serving different cuisines.
We then headed to Ardnamurchan Outside, another pop-up restaurant in Cowcaddens, a stone’s throw from the excellent Ardnamurchan restaurant.
En route, we mentioned to someone we were heading to Ardnamurchan for dinner. ‘That’s lovely,’ they replied. ‘You’ve got a nice day for the drive up the road but do you know you’re not supposed to travel between tiers?!’
What a laugh was had when we revealed it was the restaurant we were going to. A lovely plate of mussels and some excellent service later and the disappointment of being kept in tier 3 for another week was a distant memory.
The hospitality industry in Glasgow is diversifying so brilliantly and, as I’ve said before, I hope al-fresco living continues after restrictions ease.
