Why do we react so slowly to weight gain?
Have you ever got to the point where you wake up one day and realise you have gained a significant amount of weight without it really registering?
Maybe you suddenly realise your favourite jeans don’t quite fit any more. Why does it take a trigger like that to bring the problem to our attention?
This may have a lot to do with the way our brains are rigged up and how they respond to health threats or injury. The reason humans have become the dominant animal on earth is our ability to work together and collaborate with other members of our species.
This has rarely been more evident in the way we have responded to a global pandemic and the race to find effective vaccines. Our brains react well to this form of imminent threat to our survival as they are a kind of ‘focus and fight back’ or ‘leg it’ mechanism.
We often fail to respond as effectively to larger slow-moving threats that creep up on us regardless of how well-informed we are about the detriment to our health. Obesity falls into this category. Long term goals can help many, but sometimes their enormity can be overwhelming.
Perhaps we could help ourselves by tapping into our brain’s tendency to focus on short term threats or aspirations and set ourselves more easily achievable short term goals; ones that we can regularly re-set as we journey through our pathway to a healthier place.
