At the start of the pandemic in March we took the decision to make online access to our news free of charge by taking down our paywall. At a time where accurate information about Covid-19 was vital to our community, this was the right decision – even though it meant a drop in our income. In order to help safeguard the future of our journalism, the time has now come to reinstate our paywall, However, rest assured that access to all Covid related news will still remain free.
To access all other news will require a subscription, as it did pre-pandemic. The good news is that for the whole of December we will be running a special discounted offer to get 3 months access for the price of one month. Thank you for supporting us during this incredibly challenging time.
We value our content and access to our full site is only available with a subscription. Your subscription entitles you to 7-day-a-week access to our website, plus a full digital copy of that week’s paper to read on your pc/mac or mobile device. In addition, your subscription includes access to digital archive copies from 2006 onwards.
Just want to read one issue? No problem you can subscribe for just one week (or longer if you wish).
Friends of Ganavan (FoG) is committed to protecting the green spaces at Ganavan behind the beaches including the surrounding hills preventing further housing in this area.
Argyll and Bute Council’s Local Plan2 has designated this green space as a Potential Development Area (PDA) P4023 for housing.
FoG continues to press Argyll and Bute Council to remove the housing development proposal from the local plan in order to retain this special green space for the benefit of the people of Oban and visitors.
During the official objection period there were 143 objections to the Local Plan 2, with only two in favour – that is 98 per cent of people against housing in this area.
The FoG community survey results also show 98 per cent of nearly 3,000 people against development. An overwhelming majority of people wish to Keep Ganavan Green. This is the democratic will of the people.
The survey results have been sent to all Argyll and Bute councillors and the local development planning department to ask for the removal of Ganavan from the proposed Local Plan 2.
HOWEVER, so far, the Ganavan PDA has NOT been withdrawn…FoG understand there IS still time for this PDA to be removed before submitting to the Scottish Government. So we are asking again that everyone who values this green space write to all 36 councillors in Argyll and Bute to show them how much this area means to them.
The email list is on the council website or go to FoG group Facebook Page.
Oban Community Council members fully support FoG’s campaign.
Another presentation will be given on April 14 to Argyll and Bute councillors outlining the importance of the area for health, wellbeing and also the local economy. If you have not filled in a FoG survey please do so either via our FB page or email: firstname.lastname@example.org for a copy.
‘Ganavan is a special place. If development is allowed to go ahead, we shall be destroying the wildlife which will never return again. It is deplorable that this is happening in one of the most lovely green places that we have in Oban.
Tourists love to come to Ganavan year after year and this will certainly have an impact on our tourism industry when we are trying so hard to get through this pandemic and hopefully attract visitors back. Ganavan PDA should not be allowed to happen.’
