At the start of the pandemic in March we took the decision to make online access to our news free of charge by taking down our paywall. At a time where accurate information about Covid-19 was vital to our community, this was the right decision – even though it meant a drop in our income. In order to help safeguard the future of our journalism, the time has now come to reinstate our paywall, However, rest assured that access to all Covid related news will still remain free.

To access all other news will require a subscription, as it did pre-pandemic. The good news is that for the whole of December we will be running a special discounted offer to get 3 months access for the price of one month. Thank you for supporting us during this incredibly challenging time.

We value our content and access to our full site is only available with a  subscription. Your subscription entitles you to 7-day-a-week access to our website, plus a full digital copy of that week’s paper to read on your pc/mac or mobile device.  In addition, your subscription includes access to digital archive copies from 2006 onwards.

Just want to read one issue? No problem you can subscribe for just one week (or longer if you wish).

Thug uallach riatanach chun an iar mi bho chionn ghoirid agus shiubhail mi air latha cho fiadhaich ’s a chunnaic mi bho chionn greise, eadar gaoth is uisge agus fiù ’s breacadh de shneachda ùr mun àm a ràinig mi mo cheann-uidhe. Mar a thachair iomadh uair nuair a bhios mi air slighe tro Ghleann Seile, thàinig bàrdachd Nèill MhicLeòid na mo chuimhne is sin a’ dèanamh dealbh cho ealanta den t-seòrsa sheallaidhean a bha fom chomhair. “Is chì mi an Cuilitheann mar leòmhann gun tioma le fheusaig den t-sneachd air a phasgadh m’ a cheann, ’s a ghruaidhean a’ srùladh le easannan smùideach, tha tuiteam nan lùban gu ùrlar nan gleann.” ’S ann ainneamh a thèid mi seachad air Eas a’ Bhradain, aig bun Druim nan Cleòc, nach eil dròbh de luchd-turais a’  togail dheilbh, ach cha robh duine beò ri fhaicinn an latha ud is craos de chop geal air an eas, is an abhainn fòidhpe a’ cur thairis gu beul na mara.

Bha  sgeulachdan a chuala mi mu chaochladh àitichean air an t-slighe a’ ruith air m’ inntinn, agus bha mi cuideachd a’ caoidh an iomadh fiosrachadh a fhuair mi thar nam bliadhnaichean a th’ air a dhol às mo chuimhne. Tha mi air leth uasal à cuid de mhuinntir an Eilein Sgitheanaich a tha a’ gleidheadh eachdraidh an cuid bhailtean is sgìrean, ach tha mi tàmailteach nach eil comainn eachdraidh stèidhichte ann mar a th’ air a bhith cho soirbheachail anns na h-Eileanan Siar. Tha mi farmadach da-rìribh!  Le ruith bhliadhnaichean gach ginealach tha atharraichean cha mhòr do-chreidsinneach a’ tighinn air àitichean agus tha mi mothachail gum bheil na dealbhan a bhiodh mo sheanair a’ toirt dhomh air an sgìre, nuair a bha esan òg, a’ dol air ais cha mhòr ceud gu leth bliadhna. Chan eil dòigh-beatha mar a bha agus tha ainmean àite agus eachdraidh ionadail a’ dol air chall, gu h-àraid far am bheil muinntir na sgìre air gluasad air falbh airson caochladh adhbharan agus gu math tric coigrich a-nise nan àite.

Cha b’ e imrich a-mhàin a dh’fhàg cuid a chroitean is bhailtean falamh, bha cuideachd tinneis a’ fàgail bheàrnan.  B’ e Taigh Mòr NicAoidh a chanadh m’ athair ris an t-seann tobhta a bh’ air lot mo shinn-seanair, agus cha do dhìochuimhnich mi fhìn is mo pheathraichean riamh na rabhaidhean a fhuair sinn nach fhaodamaid cluich faisg air an tobhta leis gun do mharbh a’ chaitheamh na bha a’ fuireach ann. Gann leth-mhìle an iar-thuath chan eil fiù tobhtaichean ri fhaicinn ann an Lèinis far an deach baile beag a sgrios nuair, a rèir aithris, a ghlac fear a mhuinntir an àite am fiabhras breac bho bhobhstair a thog e far a’ chladaich.  Am bi cuimhne aig duine ann an leth-cheud bliadhna eile, neo am bi fiù ’s ainm eile air an làrach!

As Highland and Island communities evolve local historical societies are invaluable resources, of significant interest to visitors and researchers.
