At the start of the pandemic in March we took the decision to make online access to our news free of charge by taking down our paywall. At a time where accurate information about Covid-19 was vital to our community, this was the right decision – even though it meant a drop in our income. In order to help safeguard the future of our journalism, the time has now come to reinstate our paywall, However, rest assured that access to all Covid related news will still remain free.

To access all other news will require a subscription, as it did pre-pandemic. The good news is that for the whole of December we will be running a special discounted offer to get 3 months access for the price of one month. Thank you for supporting us during this incredibly challenging time.

We value our content and access to our full site is only available with a  subscription. Your subscription entitles you to 7-day-a-week access to our website, plus a full digital copy of that week’s paper to read on your pc/mac or mobile device.  In addition, your subscription includes access to digital archive copies from 2006 onwards.

Just want to read one issue? No problem you can subscribe for just one week (or longer if you wish).

‘S cinnteach gum bheil cuimhne mhath aig cuid agaibhse cuideachd air màileid mhòr ruadh nan litrichean, agus poca nam parsailean a bhiodh aig a’ phost air a dhruim gu sònraichte mu àm na Nollaige. Leis a’ mhòr-chuid an eisimeil ceannach tron phost cha robh eallach phasgain na annas, agus tha cuimhne agam air a’ phost a’ ruigheachd an taighe againn le togsaidean ìocshlaint chaorach, agus taidhr baidhsagal, mu ghualainn a bharrachd air a’ mhàileid àbhaisteach! Mhair cuid de na buidhnean-òrdugh-puist ainmeil a bha a’ frithealadh saoghal m’ òige, leithid Oxendale agus J D Williams, ach chan eil iad idir air a bhith cho cudromach agus a’ mhòr-chuid ag iarraidh aodach is eile fhaicinn mun ceannaich iad e. Bliadhnaichean air ais cha robh an roghainn sin ann, agus ge b ’e latha mòr a bh’ ann nuair a thigeadh am parsail, bhiodh briseadh dùil mòr cuideachd mur a freagradh na chaidh òrdachadh agus a dh’fheumte a thilleadh!

Tha mìosan a-nise bho thòisichear a’ bruidhinn air mar a bhithte a’ tilleadh gu “àbhaisteachd ùr” neo eadar-dhealaichte, agus mar is fhaide a tha bacaidhean saorsa gan sparradh oirnn ‘s ann is cinntiche a tha e nach till sinn idir chun an t-seòrsa saoghail a b’ aithne dhuinn mun do nochd Covid19. Bidh sibh uile mothachail air an dìol a tha riaghailtean glasaidh air a thoirt air obair-malairt de gach seòrsa agus, ged a tha gnìomhachas aoigheachd is thaighean-bìdh air fulang gu sònraichte, tha iomadh bùth agus ionad-seirbheis beag an impis a dhol à bith cuideachd ’s gun chead aca fosgladh. Ged nach eil tarraing sam bith ann dhomh fhìn a bhith a’ ruith bhùithtean tha fios agam nach ann mar sin a tha dha mìltean dhaoine eile, agus abair gum bheil an saoghal acasan gu bhith eadar-dhealaichte. Nach iongantach an sgrios a th’ air tachairt dha bùithtean mòra phrìomh shràidean na dùthcha, is tè às dèidh tè a’ dùnadh, is ainmean a bha aithnichte is cliùiteach a’ dol à sealladh. Dh’fhuiling iad gainnead luchd-tadhail is ceannach ri linn glasaidh-sluaigh, agus lagaich dìth cosnaidh iad chun na h-ìre ’s gun robh cothrom aig buidhnean malairteach eadar-lìon na closaichean a chreach agus cur às daibh! Chan e a-mhàin nach eil dad a dhùil aig na buidhnean-malairt eadar-lìon sin làthaireachd sam bith a steidheachadh air na sràidean, cha mhotha na sin a tha iad dol a thairgsinn cosnadh dha na mìltean a th’ air teachd-an-tìr anns na bùithtean mòra sin a chall. Togalaichean falamh a’ bhuil a th’ ann!

Chan eil teagamh nach bi e nas fhasa, agus nas luaithe, dhuinne bathar de gach seòrsa a cheannach air-loidhne, ach mar a dh’èirich le JD agus Oxendale roimhe cha tèid againn air aodach fhaicinn neo fheuchainn oirnn, agus ma tha an drathais ro theann cha bhi freagairt ach a tilleadh!

It was probably inevitable that online traders would buy-out collapsed high-street “names”, but the resulting commercial and employment wilderness in our towns and cities is surely unacceptable.
