At the start of the pandemic in March we took the decision to make online access to our news free of charge by taking down our paywall. At a time where accurate information about Covid-19 was vital to our community, this was the right decision – even though it meant a drop in our income. In order to help safeguard the future of our journalism, the time has now come to reinstate our paywall, However, rest assured that access to all Covid related news will still remain free.

To access all other news will require a subscription, as it did pre-pandemic. The good news is that for the whole of December we will be running a special discounted offer to get 3 months access for the price of one month. Thank you for supporting us during this incredibly challenging time.

We value our content and access to our full site is only available with a  subscription. Your subscription entitles you to 7-day-a-week access to our website, plus a full digital copy of that week’s paper to read on your pc/mac or mobile device.  In addition, your subscription includes access to digital archive copies from 2006 onwards.

Just want to read one issue? No problem you can subscribe for just one week (or longer if you wish).

Oban Phoenix Cinema is getting ready to bring the curtain up on a brand new initiative that will deliver a selection of independent films and favourite ‘must see’ movies right into the heart of the home.

Working with INDY Cinema Group Ltd, the community-run venue is preparing to launch an on demand cinema project which will allow it to provide a screening platform to film lovers across the region and beyond.

‘Due to Covid-19 we have no idea when we are going to be able to reopen,’ said Oban Phoenix general manager Jennie Larney.

‘In the meantime we have been working away behind the scenes to come up with ideas on how to deliver this much needed community resource during the current lockdown.

‘For me and countless others nothing can beat actually going along and enjoying the cinema experience, but people can’t leave their homes right now and some may not feel confident enough to do so for quite some while yet. This resource will provide a good alternative.

‘We are fine tuning the details but would ask that the community continue to support us by using the Oban Phoenix screening platform when it arrives.’

Ian Brown, group CEO and founder of INDY Cinema Group Ltd, told us: ‘INDY are proud to be working with the Oban Phoenix to bring their own custom-curated streaming platform to its audience.

‘INDY set up this streaming solution with our partners at Shift 72 in order not just to help cinemas in these tough times while cinemas are closed, but to create a long-term engagement channel for our cinema partners to reach, grow and develop their film and cultural offering for years to come.

‘We have brought together around 20 unique cinemas with a shared vision of working together to strengthen the cinema sector, increase film consumption and help get new filmmakers voices out to the world through this innovative collaboration.’

More details will follow in the coming weeks.
