At the start of the pandemic in March we took the decision to make online access to our news free of charge by taking down our paywall. At a time where accurate information about Covid-19 was vital to our community, this was the right decision – even though it meant a drop in our income. In order to help safeguard the future of our journalism, the time has now come to reinstate our paywall, However, rest assured that access to all Covid related news will still remain free.

To access all other news will require a subscription, as it did pre-pandemic. The good news is that for the whole of December we will be running a special discounted offer to get 3 months access for the price of one month. Thank you for supporting us during this incredibly challenging time.

We value our content and access to our full site is only available with a  subscription. Your subscription entitles you to 7-day-a-week access to our website, plus a full digital copy of that week’s paper to read on your pc/mac or mobile device.  In addition, your subscription includes access to digital archive copies from 2006 onwards.

Just want to read one issue? No problem you can subscribe for just one week (or longer if you wish).

Oban health and wellbeing charity Healthy Options is launching its most ambitious funding drive to date and needs your help to make it a rip roaring success.

The 5 to 10 and more initiative invites members of the community to contribute in one of three ways to raise much needed funds to keep the charity running.

1. Set up a direct debit: Direct debits of £5 to £10 or more will quickly add up to sustain the service.

2. Set up a sponsorship page: Pledge to walk 10,000 steps a day for five weeks or more; Pledge to increase repetitions by five or 10 or more; Pledge to take 10 extra minutes of exercise for five days in the week or more; Pledge to walk up and down your stairs five to 10 times or more every day.

3. Become a Champion: Can you give five to 10 hours or more of your time to be a Healthy Options champion?

Speaking ahead of the 5 to 10 and more launch tomorrow, Friday January 15, Emma Grant, project manager and fundraiser for Oban Healthy Options, said: ‘As a charity that has emerged from and supported the Oban and Lorn community for the past 10 years, it is now time for us to ask for your help.

‘Every year we rely on funders to provide 200k to deliver our service to our community. On average it costs us £540 per client to deliver our holistic programme which has very
high levels of engagement and success, measured by improvements in physical ability, improved mental health and reduction in reliance on NHS and medications.

‘We enable people to become more resilient, offering self-managing through a combination of 1:1 coaching, exercise classes, educational sessions, and self-management workshops.

‘Our service is additional to the Health Service, with whom we work in partnership, and this year we are coming back to our community to ask for your support in whatever way possible.’

Oban Healthy options was set up by volunteer directors in 2010 to deliver a specialist service to support people in the community to live healthier lives.

A front-line team, three full-time and five part-time, of highly-qualified exercise professionals and social prescribers support more than 400 clients each year referred by health professionals such as GPs, physiotherapists or from other third sector organisations.

During lockdown the team compiled a range of online resources to help their community. These consisted of a daily ‘Message from Mull’, from lead exercise Professional Rob Graham, Exercise for the Day and video content that relates directly to the Healthy Options programme, such as Education and Move Well classes.

Dr Gregor Smith, Chief Medical Officer for Scotland said: ‘I have been deeply impressed by the approach and impact that Healthy Options have had in their local community and very attracted to the model of provision that they have, working so closely with local heath and public services.’
