At the start of the pandemic in March we took the decision to make online access to our news free of charge by taking down our paywall. At a time where accurate information about Covid-19 was vital to our community, this was the right decision – even though it meant a drop in our income. In order to help safeguard the future of our journalism, the time has now come to reinstate our paywall, However, rest assured that access to all Covid related news will still remain free.

To access all other news will require a subscription, as it did pre-pandemic. The good news is that for the whole of December we will be running a special discounted offer to get 3 months access for the price of one month. Thank you for supporting us during this incredibly challenging time.

GOLDEN WEDDING
GRANT – MACVICAR – At Staffin Free Church, Isle of Skye, on October 23, 1970 by Rev Kenneth MacKay, Iain to Chrissie.
REFFIN – Joseph and Margaret (nee Ross) were married on October 26, 1970 at Dunblane Cathedral by Rev. John Gray.
DEATH
CAMPBELL – Peacefully at home after a long illness Ursula Rose Campbell née MacFadyen, aged 64 years, of Glenstockadale, Several, Leswalt. Beloved wife of Malcolm, dearly loved mother of Lachlan and Alasdair, much loved gran of Calum, Caithlin and Jenna. Funeral private.
CROSS – Peacefully on October 14 2020 after a long battle with ill health, aged 85 years. Peter Cross of Kilmelford, devoted husband to Margaret (recently deceased), dearly loved father of Pamela and Rosemary, respected father-in-law and grandfather. Together with Margaret once more. Anyone wishing to pay their respects is welcome to do so, while maintaining a social distance, as the hearse leaves the Church Car Park at Kilmelford on Wednesday October 28 at 11am. A private funeral service will be held at Cardross Crematorium, in line with current guidance. Peter requested donations, in lieu of flowers, if desired, should be made to the RNLI (Orkney Station).
MACLEAN – Donald. Suddenly but peacefully at home, Roadside, No 2 Kenovay, Tiree on October 17, 2020 aged 82. Beloved husband of the late Morag Kennedy. Special dad, granpa and brother.
MACLEOD – Peacefully at Sir James MacKay House, Edinburgh on Friday October16, 2020, Jenny (MacColl), wife of the late John, much loved mum, Granny and Great Granny to the family. A family service will take place on Monday October 26, 2020 at Oban Parish Church. Funeral Service will be Private due to current Government restrictions.
MERRALL – Mary, aged 96 years, passed away peacefully at her forever welcoming home at Claddach , Portnahaven, Islay on October 15, 2020. Beloved mother of Mairi and Eric, a loving grandmother and great grandmother. Very sadly missed by many.
STEWART – Rosemary Janet St Leger (nee Hodgson Wilson) East Bridgelands, Selkirk
Peacefully at Riverside Nursing Home, Selkirk, on October 20 2020, beloved wife of the late Kenneth, loving mother of Fiona, Fenella and Nicola and adored granny of Tom, Hannah, Lucy and Ailsa and great-granny of Logan and Theo. Funeral Service private. Family flowers only please, but donations for The Borders Music and Art Society may be forwarded to Thomas Brown & Sons Ltd, East Port, Melrose TD6 9EE, Tel: 01896 822632.
ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
GRAY – Lila died peacefully in Lorne and Islands Hospital, Oban October 11, 2020.
John, Laurie, Janet and families would like to thank all the staff at Ward B for the great care and attention given to their mother. Grateful thanks to Catriona & Owen at Hamish Hoey’s Funeral Directors for all their kind help.
Also, thanks to relatives, friends and neighbours for kind expressions of sympathy and condolences, for all the cards and flowers received, along with lovely tributes to Lila.
INGLIS – The Inglis family wish to thank Connel medical staff and Dr Macphee for all the attention to Ian. The staff of LIGH, community nurses, OT staff, ambulance technician and community nurses for their dedication and care. Thank you very much to Ian MacInnes and everyone at D&A Munn and Brian for his fitting graveside tribute. Many thanks to all who attended the funeral and paid their respects at the entrance to the cemetery. Everyone who sent flowers, cards and messages of sympathy. It was very appreciated by all the family, thank you.
McCONNELL – The family of Christine McConnell wish to thank most sincerely all relatives, friends and neighbours for all the beautiful cards, mass cards, flowers and messages of sympathy they received. Our heartfelt thanks to them all. A special thank you to Fr David, Fr MacKinnon, Deacon Wynne and Fr Danny for all their visits and prayers prior to Christine’s passing. Also for her comforting mass service. A special thank you to Chris Du Plessis for his heartfelt eulogy at the funeral mass. Sincere thanks to Manson & MacBeath for their compassion and professionalism in all aspects of the funeral arrangement. Thank you to Andrew Orr for his lovely piping at the church and graveside. Also another special thank you to Andrew Gault, Jane Moran, Craig Gardener and Margaret Johnston for their kindness, care and support. Finally thank you to everyone who donated in memory of Christine to the Salesian’s work in Africa especially their care for orphans. £300 was raised.

PEARSON – Tam, Christine, Ailsa and Clare would like to thank all relatives, friends and neighbours most sincerely for the many cards, flowers and messages of sympathy received following the tragic loss of Kenneth. Thanks also for all baking, meals, foodstuffs and other practical help received. Sincere thanks to Ian of D & A Munn for the very compassionate and personal handling of the funeral arrangements. To the Rev Dugald Cameron for a beautiful service, visits and continuing support. Thanks also to the local Police for their support at this difficult time. Special thanks to the brethren of Oban Commercial Lodge No. 180 and sister lodges for the very dignified and fitting tribute given to Kenneth. Also to those who lined the streets to pay their respects, many of whom had travelled a long distance. To Clare Jordan for her beautiful recording of Caledonia and to Niall Jordan for piping, also the Royal Hotel for an excellent lunch. Thank you to all who have donated to Martyn’s Monday Club in Kenneth’s memory. He is now singing with the Angels.
