From Lochaline to Stirling for the Scottish Regional Final of the Rotary Young Chef of the Year, Helen Jones, 12, had another fantastic result picking up first place for the school’s competition.
This big win now means that Helen will progress to the National Final to be held in Stratford-Upon-Avon in May and go up against other young chefs from across the UK.
This is the first time that Lochaber Rotary Club and Ardnamurchan High School have reached the national stage for the competition.
For her three-course meal, Helen cooked crispy smoked mackerel cannelloni, beetroot and horseradish remoulade with an orange and pumpkin seed salad, followed by roast loin of Highland venison with haggis, neeps and tatties and baby onion jus. Her dessert was pear tarte tatin with vanilla ice cream.
Ardnamurchan High’s Young Chef mentor and coordinator, Patricia Kennedy, has guided many students from Ardnamurchan through the competition in the past is delighted to see Helen doing so well.
She said: ‘Helen’s success is a testament to her commitment, hard work and skill, and the school would like to thank local chef Gary Phillips for his support, Helen’s parents, the Rotary Club of Lochaber, and Mowi who sponsor the event.
‘A huge well done to Helen.’
