Lochaber Leisure Centre Swim team held its annual awards night on Friday night at Fort William Shinty Club.
Awards were presented to the following swimmers:
Most improved 12 and under- Charleigh Adams
Most improved 15 and under – Dobrochna Czapla
Most improved 15 and under – Indigo Grier
Swimmer of the year and most improved 12 and under- Calum Stewart
Swimmer of the year and fastest 100m front crawl swim team awards – Jenne MacLean
Meanwhile, at the end of January, the first part of two weekends making up the North District Age Group Records was held.
Lochaber Leisure Centre Swim Team had 10 swimmers travelling to participate – around half the swimmers from the club who had qualifying times.
It was a successful weekend, as the swimmers involved all achieved at least one Long Course Personal Best time, so progress is being made, as they try to qualify for the Scottish National Age Groups event which will be held in early April.
There was a silver medal from Danni MacLean, as well as 17 finalists (top 10), which must be a record for the club, as seven of its swimmers achieved top 10 placings.
Round up of results in age order:
Andzelin Gerasimuka (10) – 6th and 8th in Breaststroke finals and two club Age Group Records. To put her swims into perspective, Andzelina was swimming in the 13 year and under age group, and not surprisingly, was the only 10-year-old to make the finals.
Mya MacCallum (11) – to qualify for the 13 year and under shows the potential that Mya has over the next couple of years as she will be competing in the same age group for next two years.
Sean Cann (12) – five swims, five Club Long Course Age Group Records, four top 20 placings; a little extra push will take him into the finals soon.
Yasmin MacCallum (12) – 2 swims, 2 Club Age Group Records, first time at Long Course meet and North District Championships.
Yasmins improvement this year, has been down to hard work. Looks good to keep on this upward trejectory for the rest of the season.
Dobrochna Czapla (14) – 4 Long Course Personal Best Times; another hard worker who has made a quick progression from last year to a a 7th place in the 400m was a big step up and there is more to come!
Hannah Loughray (14) – 6 Personal Bests Times, four top ten finishes including a 4th and 5th place. Hannah has moved up from outside top twenty, to top ten in her best stokes; again improving leaps and bounds..
Danni MacLean(14) – Silver Medal in 50m Butterfly, 4th place in 100m Front Crawl and swam in four finals. All the above were firsts for Danni who also produced a new Club Age Group Record in 50m Butterfly. Danni is becoming more skilled and therefore just keeps getting quicker. .
Evie-Jay Clark (14) – 3 Long Course Personal Best Times, including three finals and with Hannah and Danni, gave Lochaber amazingly three finalists in the 50m Butterfly and 200m IM. In the 14/15 year old age group, Evie-Jay is swimming back to her best again.
Alice-Ann Macpherson (15) – a new Personal Best Time in the 100m Back Crawl, four top twenty finishes. Alice-Ann has a lot of talent and between her and our other 14 year olds, the club might get another sub 60 seconds 100m girl front crawler, but who will be next?
Jenna MacLean (16) – 2 Club Age Group Records, 3 finals and 4th place in 50m Front Crawl. All achieved without swimming at her very best; just a weee tweek here and there, should produce more great swims for part 2 in March.
As previously mentioned, the club is moving onwards and upwards, especially, with what was the result of the day, when Alice – Ann, Danni, Hannah and Jenna achieved fourth place in the 4x100m senior front crawl relay and only losing out on a medal to two teams from the Aberdeen Performance Team whose winning team averaged 22 years old, whilst the Lochaber team’s average age was 14 years old.
The same team with Evie-Jay replacing Hannah, also finished in 8th place in the 4x50m medlay relay event.
The club also had its first qualifiers for the Scottish National Age Group Championships.
Hannah and Danni both in the 50m Butterfly, Evie-Jay 100m and 200m Backcrawl
Jenna has a remarkable nine times including 50/100/200m Frontcrawl and Fly, 100/200m Backcrawl and 200m Individual Medley.
