More than 70 pupils from Oban high, Tobermory high, Campbeltown grammar, Dunoon grammar and Rothesay grammar schools recently  converged at Oban’s Atlantis Leisure for annual regional badminton qualifiers.

The visitors had difficult journeys through snowy conditions on the morning of the competition but everyone made it to compete in a fantastic day of badminton.

Active schools co-ordinators Gillian Walker and Alan Wright and Oban High School PE teacher Denise Gemmell organised the event which has been running since 2002.

Under 14, 16 and 19 singles, doubles and mixed doubles competitions for boys and girls were played with a good spread of prizewinners from throughout the region.

Mrs Gemmell said: ‘There were many nail biting games played not just in the finals but throughout the day.

‘The standard was exceptionally high and we wish all the pupils that go on to represent Argyll and Bute in the Scottish Schools competition in March the best of luck.

‘Most important though was the spirit in which games were played. It was competitive but very sporting and fair.’
