The life and times of Scotland’s National Bard Robbie Burns was celebrated with haggis and drams at the weekend.
Saturday marked the 260th anniversary of the poet’s birth and the occasion was marked with suppers and get-togethers in honour of the poet.
Inveraray Burns Club held its annual traditional Burns Supper in the Inveraray Inn, piping in a massive haggis.
Club president John Burns chaired proceedings which started with a poignant minute’s silence for Inveraray legend Donald Clark who recently died.
Michael Kidd addressed the haggis after piper Stuart Liddell did the honours. Kenneth Welsh, a guest from East Kilbride, carried it to the table with the Reverend Rodrick Campbell saying grace.
Liz Welsh, Kenneth’s wife, proposed the loyal toast. Piper Stuart Liddell performed for the audience before the Immortal Memory, the main toast of the evening, was delivered by the Reverend Campbell.
Club treasurer Jim McMillan proposed a witty Toast To The Lassies, ably replied to by Immediate Past President Sylvia Stark. Folk duo Beltherskyte entertained.
Michael Kidd recited A Poet’s Welcome to his Love Begotten Daughter, written by Burns to commemorate the birth of his oldest daughter, and the evening was rounded of with the singing of The Star of Rabbie Burns
and Auld Lang Syne.
In Oban, the Dove Centre’s Friday morning Men’s Group held a version of a Burns Supper – closer to breakfast time. The celebration involved music, poetry, stories and history about the bard and reminiscing about Burns suppers from the past.
New members are always welcome to join the weekly group at the centre in Stevenson Street, starting at 10.30am.
The Burns Supper at Luing’s Atlantic Islands Centre was a sell-out. A delicious meal, including clootie dumpling made by the island’s home bakers went down a treat, as did the singing, music, poetry and Highland dancing performed by a young guest, Jess, from Lochgilphead.
A great time was had by everyone in Appin with the village hall packed full of people enjoying all things Rabbie Burns.
All from the village, the speakers were James Weir, Mike Storey, Duncan MacCorquodale, Jim Milligan, Grace Mcleod, Rachel Mackenzie, Julie Weir and chairman Lindsay Muir. Highland dancers and Burns themed music from band Sutherland’s Groove provided added entertainment to the evening which was organised by Appin Entertainments which arranges community events throughout the year.
Oban Bowling Club joined in the Burns Night fun, with Patrick Freytag cooking up a storm in his role as chef. More than 40 club members enjoyed a fabulous meal of haggis, neeps and tatties.
Iain Weir did the address, Peter Park performed Holy Willie’s Prayer, Sandy Carr was awesome on the accordion and a wee sing song was enjoyed by everyone present.
