Fort William High Street has a woolly new presence with the opening of The Caledonian Wool Company by Jennifer MacKenzie.
Also known as Jam, she has been knitting and crocheting since leaving art school in 2007 and began spinning her own wool five years ago. Her work can also be found at www.applejamfibre.co.uk.
When Jennifer moved to Fort William, she founded a local crafting circle and realised there was nowhere to buy pure Scottish wool locally.
In order to address that issue, The Caledonian Wool Company will be a wool shop focusing on Scottish wool, sourced directly from the producers as well as Jennifer’s hand-spun yarn.
There will also be weekly courses, drop-in classes and private tuition available throughout the year.
And to mark the opening of the shop and announce Jennifer’s arrival on the High Street, friends helped her knit, weave and crochet special coverings for a bike which has drawn admiring glances from passers-by.
‘Thursday night’s opening was simply fantastic – the shop was mobbed with people queueing out the door,’ Jennifer told us this week.
