The conference and events manager at the Alexandra Hotel in Fort William has been awarded honorary membership of Lochaber Rotary Club.

Val McIver joins a list of less than 20 people bestowed with this special honour in the club’s 70-year history.

The club has held its weekly business meetings in the ‘Alex’ since 2007 and, during this time, Val and her colleagues have proved excellent and welcoming hosts to club members and guests.

Rotarian Iain Johnston, immediate past-president, presented Val with the Rotary lapel badge at the club’s business lunch meeting on September 18.

Mr Johnston said: ‘Val and her team were very supportive to me and the club during my presidential year, as well as the previous 11 years, and I would like to express our appreciation with the award.’

Val is a well-known Fort William figure and has worked in the hotel for 30 years. Her family has a long association with the ‘Alex’, during the Miltons era and now with Strathmore Hotels.

Her parents were much-loved, long-term stalwarts of the hotel and many of her seven brothers and sisters also did spells in the hotel.

Val is married to Kevin, an off-shore chief electrician, and they have three sons. Her hobby is running and she has competed in many half marathons – although now she runs mainly for fun.

Val said she ‘enjoyed the banter’ with club members and thanked everyone for her award.
