An eco-friendly food packaging company is extending its collection service to Oban and the west coast of Scotland.
Vegware, which launched its composting collection service Close the Loop in 2017, turns the plastic alternative into high-grade compost in under 12 weeks.
The company announced last week it would be expanding to Oban, Fort William, Lochgilphead, Stranraer, Girvan, Ayr and Inverclyde.
Businesses in Oban have been using Vegware for a number of years.
Claire Bruce, of Food From Argyll at the Pier, said: ‘We have been using Vegware since we opened just over three years ago, but because Argyll and Bute Council don’t have compost facilities, we can’t make full use of it and it went in general waste.’
While Claire said it is still better than using plastic, she was happy to hear the nears that Close the Loop will be collecting from Oban, meaning the packaging will ‘break down within 12 weeks’.
Vegware will supply the businesses with special bins and they will uplift the produce on a regular basis.
‘I emailed them about a year and a half ago asking when they were going to expand to this area and I saw their post on Facebook page a couple of days ago,’ Claire added. ‘Hopefully, there will be a few businesses in the area that will be doing it as well to make it worth their while.
‘The Vegware itself is a bit more expensive, but not masses more. I think it is worth that little bit extra and people love it. They come in and see we have compostable packages and I think they come back because of that. We don’t have any single-use plastic in the cafe at all.’
