September might spell the coming of autumn and while the weather may well be in agreement, at Atlantis it only means the continuation of the busyness of summer! The past few months have been some of Atlantis’ busiest this year, read on to find out what they’ve held for life at the centre.

Summer activities

One of the most exciting things about Atlantis is the way it keeps us all on our toes! Each day is different and each month fresh from the next.  Add in the long weeks of summer holiday freedom and all predictability goes out the window – we love it!  The school holidays mean the centre is abuzz from open to close, thick with an atmosphere of action brought by our summer holiday camp programme.

This year’s holiday programme was one of our busiest and most ambitious yet.  A range of young folk from across the Oban and Lorn area were even joined by some tourists happy to muck in with the fun and games – it was great to have them all with us.   Our holiday camps are a great opportunity to meet young customers in a different environment, getting to know them in a fresh new context.  Plans are afoot to increase camps throughout the year, so watch this space!

Staff news

Atlantis have now adopted the Royal Life Saving Society’s curriculum and framework as they become our provider for pool safety.  Last month, Kirsty and Jonathon from our duty manager team passed their week long RLSS accreditation.  This means that they are able to train and assess our own team which allows us to bolster safety around the pool.  Congratulations Jonathon and Kirsty!

Martin Rennie and Sophie Rosinski will soon be off to do their BodyPump course with Les Mills.  This will be a great added benefit for them both, allowing them to help build capacity within Atlantis’ fitness programme.  All the very best Martin and Sophie!

Congratulations to Catriona Tinney who has recently become a qualified Les Mills BodyStep instructor.  Catriona first started her journey to becoming an instructor simply by coming along to classes as a customer! It’s fantastic to have her qualified and an important member of the team.

A large group from Atlantis have just returned from the latest Les Mills ‘Tribal’ gathering held in Glasgow.  These events are fantastic for team morale and offer a great opportunity to learn new techniques and workouts.  The team bring this new knowledge and experience back to Atlantis to make sure our programmes are kept fresh and unpredictable!

For 17 of our swimming instructors, the first day of September was spent in the pool here at the centre, refining and upskilling their training.  We’re so grateful to these guys for giving up their weekend to make sure the Oban Swim School is kept right at the cutting edge with the training it delivers.

Local partnership

Two of the staff team were thrilled to get an invitation from the Oban Rotary Club to join them for lunch. Robbie and Charlie joined our general manager Nick to explain how Atlantis has helped their own personal journeys so far.  They both left the group thoroughly inspired by their stories.

Opportunities like this which bring local organisations together are so important for keeping rural communities close-knit and communication high. Thank you very much to the Rotary Club for their warm welcome and to Robbie and Charlie for their willingness to be involved.

Preparations are well under way for the next Hope2Oban LockIn held in partnership with Atlantis Leisure.  The LockIn sees the centre turned into a through-the-night youth club for the brand new S1 year group from the High School, raising funds for H2O in the process.  The LockIn is now in its 15th edition and is a fantastic way to galvanise the new S1s as a peer group.  This next LockIn will take place on October 25.

We were delighted to welcome Oban Camanachd Shinty Team to Atlantis earlier this month.  The team joined us for one of our Grit sessions designed to help refine and increase agility and power – there were tired faces at the end! It was great to have them with us as we continue to seek ways to partner with the wider Oban community.

Our new StayActive programme is settling in as an integral part of the Atlantis weekly rhythm.  StayActive is designed to offer continued support to Healthy Options clients who come to the end of their three-month programmes.

Since introducing StayActive in May, we’ve now welcomed more than 80 new customers and we’re thoroughly enjoying working closely together.  In addition to classes held at the centre, Donna has also been out on the road launching two new classes at Easdale and Dalmally.  It’s great to get out and about and hold these classes in the community.

If you would like to join any of these classes or would like to speak with us about holding an additional class elsewhere then please get in touch!
