Lochaber Chamber of Commerce’s Premium Member Business Forum held a constructive roundtable discussion with Ivan McKee MSP ‘Minister for Trade, Investment and Innovation’ at Liberty British Aluminium  last week.

The group heard from Mr McKee about the Scottish Government’s plans for the internationalisation of Scotland’s economy and the development of business from a huge range of world-class sectors to encourage investment in Scotland.

Frazer Coupland, CEO of Lochaber Chamber of Commerce, led a productive discussion between Mr McKee and the Premium Members which covered Government investment into transport, infrastructure and the anticipated development of the STEM (Science, technology, engineering and maths) education centre in Fort William.

Mr McKee was positive about Scotland’s ability to attract wider-UK and global talent to locations across the country as well as rural areas. These developments present a challenge and opportunity around promotion of available jobs, roles and placement across sectors.

Members highlighted a desire for further local investment and developments to present further opportunities for local students so they don’t need to move away to learn or progress their careers.

Climate change and the opportunities for business formed a key part of the morning with local business HWEnergy providing insight into emerging technologies and the Net Zero target of being carbon neutral by 2045.

Transport considerations also formed part of this discussion and the use of cleaner/ alternative fuels for transportation, a topic of keen interest to our premium members in the transport industry.

The crucial topic of the Net Zero target and how businesses need to adapt will also be discussed at a special workshop during Lochaber Ideas Week in November.
