Kyokushinkai Karate

Classes continue as normal over the holidays. Instructor Iain Rodger has just returned from south Wales where he was holding a national grading for students in that area.

The annual beach training session will be held on Saturday August 24 at the usual location of Kilmory beach from 11am.

Senshi Do Kick Boxing carries on through the school holidays, so if your children are bored, bring them along on a Wednesday at 4.30pm or a Sunday at 11am for a work out they will find fun and will take the edge off their energy levels and. The first session is free. Beginners, aged five years and up, are always welcome.

Shukokai Karate

The clubs take a break during the school holidays and resume in August.
Argyll Shukokai has clubs in Inveraray, Oban and Dalmally. Anyone interested in joining these clubs can get details from Kenny Gray on 07884 183905.


Oban MMA/BJJ hosted a seminar with Higher Levels Cameron Donnelly on Sunday July 21. Cameron regularly travels to train in Canada and New York and has trained with some of the top names in the sport including John Danaher and UFC great George St. Pierre.

The seminar covered leg locks and ankle locks, starting with how to control the leg to prevent your opponent escaping, then the most efficient way to submit him cleanly.

Monday’s nogi (shorts and rash guard) rolling classes continue to be popular and have been extended to 90 minutes instead of an hour. Tuesday’s gi classes go over a specific position with attacking and defending variations. Thursdays MMA classes are picking up with a mix of boxing, Thai boxing, wrestling and submissions.

Head coach Coogie Potter is travelling to Iceland at the beginning of August to train at Mjolner MMA gym in Reykjavik, home to UFC fighter Gunner Nelson and one of the top gyms in the world. He will be learning BJJ and

MMA techniques to take back to Oban to continue the growth and expansion of his students.

Wado Kai Karate

The Park Primary School class is closed until after the school summer holidays. These sessions, for children aged 7 to 10 years at the school, will resume on August 26 at 3.15pm. Contact Mike Faulkner,, for more details.
