Four local sportsmen and friends of Fort William shinty player, James Tangney, who suffered serious spinal  injuries in an accident while in India,  are shortly setting off on a major fund raising campaign to help him with treatment costs.

Shinty players and footballers Bryan Simpson, Darren Quigg, Craig Forbes and Ross Wilson, who will be the driver and chef, will start a Three Peaks challenge on August 8, by  running up Mount Snowdon, then Scafell Pike and finally Ben Nevis with the aim of completing the task  in under 24 hours.

Immediately after tackling Ben Nevis the runners will attend a race night at Fort William Shinty Club with all money going  to meet ongoing costs related to James’s rehab and recovery.

Local businesses,  Duncan Kelly Design, Sunny’s Sports Bar, McDonald’s Fort William and LEAP have helped fund travel and set up costs, with other companies also making donations to the event.  Donations are also coming from  far and wide through a dedicated  JustGiving site .

‘I just want to say I am completely overwhelmed by the generosity and kindness shown by the whole community,’ said James Tangney. ‘So many people that I personally don’t know very well have donated and passed on their well wishes through friends and family it really is eye opening how decent and generous people of Fort William are.

‘My progression is a slow long process but I’m continuing on an upward course. With spinal cord injuries there are a lot of different factors outside just losing the ability to walk that I continue to work through as well. I just need to keep working hard and pushing myself to recover as best as I can.’
