Lochaber MP Ian Blackford last week visited Europe’s largest aluminium plant, Aluminium Dunkerque, in the French port of Dunkirk.

The Ross, Skye and Lochaber MP’s fact-finding mission allowed him to hear first hand about the desire of the Liberty Group to deliver investment and growth through investing in downstream applications, as well as the opportunity of sharing best practice and collaboration between its operations in Dunkirk and Lochaber.

Speaking following his visit, Mr Blackford said: ‘The Dunkirk aluminium plant, together with its downstream operations elsewhere in France, is a shining example of what can be achieved by having a vertically integrated project to create jobs on a sustainable basis.

‘It was a very worthwhile trip. I think what is really important is that any future plans in Lochaber successfully synergise operations with their partners in France.

‘To put it simply, there is a successful blueprint that shows the way forward for the operations in Lochaber. I would like to thank all those at Liberty who made this visit possible. It was an informative and beneficial site visit.’
