At the start of the pandemic in March we took the decision to make online access to our news free of charge by taking down our paywall. At a time where accurate information about Covid-19 was vital to our community, this was the right decision – even though it meant a drop in our income. The annual Oban charity raft race will take place on Saturday August 24 – giving would-be competitors time to construct their vessels.

The race will get under way at 2pm at the town centre beach and the sponsored event will raise money for the the Oban Lions Charity fund.

Anyone interesting in entering should know a few of the rules such as the rafts must be home-made and propelled by oar type paddles and/or home sails.

There is no canoe style rafts and all crew must be on the raft, not in it.

All polystyrene-based materials must be contained in a sealed case/containers.

Nails, screws, mental bindings or any other objects must not be allowed to protrude from the raft as these may cause injury to the competitors or other contestants.
