Kyokushinkai Karate

Three club members from Oban will be joining their coach Iain Rodger at a rigorous summer training camp in the Peak District.

Sean McQuade, Charlie McLaughlin and Darryl McLaughlin, along with Friday June 28.

With just over a week until the summer grading, the class is focusing on requirements for the test.

Senshi Do Kick Boxing held a grading on Wednesday May 29 with the following students advancing to the following belts:

Evie Strachan, 8th Kyu Orange Belt; Lewis Cairns, Innes MacCallum and Ross Burns, 7th Kyu Green Belt; Ben Munro and Ava Rowan, 6th Kyu Blue Belt; Aidan Steeman, 5th Kyu Purple Belt; and Megan Currie, 4th Kyu Red Belt.

Coach Wullie Rodger said: ‘Thanks to junior black belts Cody McCulloch, Lewis May, Billie Bratton, Logan Galbraith, Adam Bratton and 1st Kyu Henley McCulloch for helping out with the grading.’

Training continues as usual with seniors on Wednesdays from 6pm to 7:30pm; juniors on Wednesdays from 4.30pm to 6pm and Sundays 11am to 1pm. Find the club on Facebook Senshi Do Kickboxing or email

Shukokai Karate

The club has held its grading test and tournament. Full details in the next report.

Argyll Shukokai has clubs in Inveraray, Oban and Dalmally. Anyone interested in joining can get details from Kenny Gray on 07884 183905.

Oban MMA members have been working on the spider guard, drilling this to become more confident and competent on this tricky position which is becoming more commonly used in competitions because of its total control of your opponent.

The club wants new members and is offering ‘Free Fridays’ beginners classes throughout June at 7.30pm. Call in and try a class.

Classes are all at 7.30 pm, with BJJ on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays and MMA on Thursdays.

Wado Kai Karate

Classes continue at Dunbeg Primary School on Tuesday nights at 6.30pm and 8.30pm and at Park Primary School, Oban, for under 11’s on Mondays at 3.30pm.
