Cadets and staff from 1730 (Lochaber) Squadron recently travelled to RAF Kirknewton on the outskirts of Edinburgh to take part in gliding training and flying.
Each cadet needed prior training with 661 Volunteer Gliding Squadron at RAF Lossiemouth, which consisted learning how to use parachutes, how to exit an aircraft if there were problems, and how to enter and exit the aircraft safely.
Cdt Callum MacLellan, from Ardamurchan High School and Cdt Andrew Dibsdale, from Kilchuimen Academy, had a fabulous day in great weather. Cdt Dibsdale was first to go up with a 661 pilot taking the controls. They had a flying time in excess of 15 minutes, catching thermals keeping them in the air for longer than expected. Cdt Dibsdale was to take controls during the flight and practice what he had previously only done on the squadron flight simulator.
Cdt MacLellan was next to take to the air. He was up on three occasions, practicing his take-off and landings, with each flight taking around five minutes.
Both cadets were able to assist with preparing the gliders for take-off and recovering them from landing and readying them for the next pilots to take over.
Cadets from 52 Aviemore Squadron were with them on the day and all cadets enjoyed themselves and were extremely excited to take to the skies.
On another weekend Cdt Dibsdale travelled to Dundee to Tayside Aviation to take part in a flying experience day with ‘The Flying Aces’. This group of young pilots gave up their time to give RAF Air Cadets a chance to experience a flight over Dundee, seeing the skills involved in flying and answering any questions they had about their experience.
