Biscuits made on Mull are being enjoyed by long-haul flight passengers 30,000 feet in the air.
Every week, 35,000 snack-sized packets of Island Bakery biscuits, alternating between lemon melts and shortbread, wing their way to British Airways.
Virgin Atlantic is another jet-setting client ordering about 9,000 packets every week and the bakery has just signed a new deal to supply more of the organic treats to a Middle Eastern airline.
One happy passenger recently tweeted a photo of himself snacking his complimentary lemon melts on the tarmac at Singapore airport.
‘We don’t have salespeople going out knocking on doors so it’s great when they come to us. It’s great marketing having people sitting 30,000 feet up in the air with nothing much else to do than enjoy our biscuits. Word soon gets round,’ said Joe Reade, who runs Island Bakery with his wife Dawn.
The firm how has 35 staff working for them from a renewable energy- powered bakery built seven years ago using wind and water for electricity and wood for heating the ovens.
Closer to home, people will see the bakery’s biscuits for sale on CalMac ferries.
‘We sell mainly in the UK in delis and farm shops and in Waitrose but there is also demand for them in the Netherlands, Scandinavia, Germany and France,’ added Joe.
The bakery was proud to pick up a top award in the Artisan Food category of the 2019 Scottish Rural Awards earlier this year and has plans to launch new products.
‘It’s been seven years since we built the factory and each year we’ve said we really must get round to putting out some new products but haven’t. This year we are determined to buckle down and do it,’ said Joe.
