Two Skye tourism initiatives have joined forces to allow visitors to navigate the island through a mobile app for the first time.
Donald from Skye, launched last year, acts as a hub of information for visitors, with business listings, a ‘recommended by Donald’ list and clips of the animated character Donald, assisted by his trusted companion Fergie the Tractor.
Having teamed up with the Explore Skye app, each individual location and business signed up to the service will now be shown on an app map. The GPS means that tourists will be able to navigate between the featured visitor attractions with ease.
Daniel Willoughby from Explore Skye added: “When Donald from Skye first approached me with the idea of incorporating his interactive map within the Explore Skye app it seemed like a great opportunity. Initially I wasn’t sure how feasible it would be to faithfully replicate the map across two separate mobile platforms.
‘However, I recognised the benefits the Donald from Skye map content would bring to all users and accepted the challenge. Over the course of several months I enjoyed seeing the project come together piece by piece and am now delighted with the end result.”
The map builds on the many features on the Donald from Skye platform designed to make it as user friendly as possible and enhance the visitor experience. The website was also translated into Mandarin earlier this year.
The launch of the map comes ahead of Easter which will see the tourist season in full swing on the Misty Isle.
