Oban Phoenix Cinema has launched an appeal for funds and volunteers, after a leaking roof above the small screen turned the front row into ‘a splash zone’ like ‘sea world’.
The cinema posted on its Facebook page last Thursday: ‘Oban, we need your help. We’ve had a fantastic summer with some really warm dry spells. But we all know living in the west coast of Scotland can be very rainy! The recent heat followed by the downpours has really damaged our ceiling in Screen Two.’
Duty manager Marco Pacitti said: ‘I do not know who decided to make a flat roof in Scotland, but that is what we have. The screen was closed while the water was coming down. It is up and running again. As soon as it is dry they can start working on it. We have someone starting work on the front and on the roof above screen two on Friday, but if the weather is bad he will be working on the toilets.’
Cinema staff hoping people can donate money and skills to help fix and decorate. ‘If you would like to donate, there are donation boxes in store, but money is not all we need,’ the cinema’s Facebook appeal continued. ‘We would love it if someone would like to volunteer their time or services to help us with any of these repairs.
‘We are a non-profit, community-owned cinema and also a registered charity. We are so thankful for those who have participated in our raffle to raise funds for our roof and toilets.’
The raffle concludes on Friday August 10, when the first, second and third prize-winners will be drawn.
‘There is a misconception we are making plenty of money, but it all goes back into the building,’ Marco said. ‘There is a multitude of things that are quite expensive. Not a lot of people know the amount of work that goes on behind the scenes.’
But the biggest help, he said, is simply to come and watch the films. ‘The main thing we want is bums on seats.’
A recent boost to the coffers came from showing Mamma Mia!, Here We Go Again which Marco said had attracted nearly 550 people in the first weekend, and almost filled the big screen one weekday night, selling 146 out of 148 tickets. Since the film opened on July 27, Marco counted 1,700 people had come through the doors to see it. ‘We’d like to see you all more often,’ the cinema said.
