OBAN BJJ took a group of ten students to the winter leg of the BJJ Scotia Cup at Meadowbank Stadium, Edinburgh.
More than 360 people took part in the tournament which had gi and nogi divisions. The event would see five Oban BJJ students enter their first competition.
First came the gi divisions from 10am until 1pm. Ewan Weir was the first to win a medal – silver in a stacked division full of talent.
Next up was Dawid Loukil, who lost in the final by two points to pick up silver. Coll Johnstone got bronze and Mateusz Grabiec got silver too, losing the final by two points.
The other students who did not get podium finishes gained invaluable experience learning to deal with nerves and pressure in a competitive environment.
Nogi ran until after 5pm and again was very busy with large divisions. Coll Johnstone took bronze, which was a great achievement. Two medals from his first competition speaks volumes to his commitment and hard work.
Tomasz Kapusta lost his final on an advantage, but was pleased with his silver.
Mateusz Grabiec won nogi gold, sweeping past all his opponents on his way to final.
The final tally of medals was seven which for the size of club compared to the powerhouse gyms the Oban boys were competing against shows the level of commitment and hard work put in by everyone.
Coach Coogie said: ‘We would like to thank our new sponsor Scottish Sea Farms for their investment in us and to Alex Hill fencing which helped with travel and gym’.
