A group of keen hockey players in Lochaber are giving people in the area the chance to try out the sport in an attempt to resurrect a hockey club in the area.
Several years after Lochaber last had a hockey club, a pair of committed players have taken it upon themselves to get people playing the sport again. Ruth MacCallum and Sarah Callander are looking to set up a new community hockey team for all abilities, even those that have never held a hockey stick before.
Ruth says that the club will have a view to play competitively again in the future and perhaps enter a league for regular matches. But for now, she is happy to get more people playing the sport in Lochaber in a friendly and fun environment.
Former Scotland junior player, Lewis Gibson, from Glenfinnan, will be using his expertise to lead the coaching sessions. Lewis was part of the historic Lochaber High School hockey team that won the Scottish Schoolboys’ Hockey Cup – the first time a Highland school, and only the second time a state school, had won the tournament.
The new weekly mixed adults hockey sessions take place at the all-weather pitch at Lochaber High School on Friday nights from 6pm until 8pm. Sticks and balls will be supplied.
